Ian Cockerill, our Development Advisor has been with us for just over a month now. Here Ian tells you a little more about his role at Nova, as well as some previous work undertaken by himself.
Hi, I'm Ian and I've recently started work at Nova as an Advisor!
My role is to work with Nova members to help them develop sustainably and do more of the great things they already do for the benefit of Wakefield district and its people. This can involve providing simple advice and guidance on governance and funding to collaborating with groups of organisations to deliver contracts for the delivery of key services to local people.
I really enjoy my job because I get to work with inspirational people who are proud and passionate about their community and strive to make life better for their friends and neighbours. For me to be able to help people like these find solutions to the problems they and their communities face is both a privilege and very rewarding particularly when you see the outcome of the things people can do and the positive difference they make to lives and places.
My working life prior to joining Nova has spanned work in heavy industry, the voluntary sector, and a twenty year career in local government. For the last five years I was the Development Manager for Community Campus in Teesside, an award winning organisation working with homeless people. My work then, as now, was predominantly around helping not for profit organisations grow and develop and become more sustainable so that they could continue to improve places and lives.
I’m really excited about working here in Wakefield. It is full of fantastic places with passionate people who care about and where they live. Helping them to make Wakefield an even greater place to live will be challenging for all sorts of reasons, not least of which the shortage of money these days to get things done, but there are always opportunities out there and I am looking forward to working hard to help our sector make the most of the opportunities here in Wakefield.
