Wakefield Hospice

Wakefield Hospice is a charity that provides specialist end of life care and support for local people and families living with life-limiting conditions. At the Hospice we provide in-patient beds, a day service for patients and their carer’s, bereavement counselling, complementary therapies and dementia services supported by our multi-professional team of staff and volunteers.

Wakefield Hospice have been a Nova member since September 2014!

What project are you working on that you’re most proud of?

Outreach services, the hospice is passionate about ensuring that its services are inclusive to everyone in need of support. We respect diversity of each individual's religious, cultural and belief system. The Outreach Service is enabling us to support more people who traditionally would not access hospice care without being admitted to our in-patient unit.

What is your organisation’s vision for Wakefield District?
To support the needs of people living with life-limiting illness, and those close to them to be met with skill, compassion and care. Providing a service to manage distressing symptoms, physical, emotional, psychosocial and psychological needs. To promote seamless care, while in the hospice and at home and working cohesively with other care providers.

Any project, volunteer or staff member that you’d like to highlight?
The hospice is proud of the work it does within the local community and how it has helped others to develop their skills in end of life care. This includes some of our new initiatives such as the dementia day therapy respite service and the bereavement and communication skills training package that we deliver to health and social care professions.

Fun fact about your organisation
Wakefield Hospice opened in April 1990 and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II visited the hospice in March 1992 so we were delighted and honoured to be a host venue for the lighting of a beacon to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee on 4 June. In the afternoon the hospice invited our patient’s, their visitors and the community of Wakefield to come and join us for afternoon tea.

What do you like about being a Nova member?
It’s an excellent organisation that helps community groups and organisations work collaboratively together. Through our membership of Nova we have been able to gain access to relevant organisations that are assisting us with new service development for the community of Wakefield.

How can local organisations and the public support you?
The hospice’s annual running costs are around £4.2m and the vast majority of this comes from fundraising and donations from the local community. There a lots of ways you can support our work; taking part in an event, joining the lottery, making a regular gift, leaving a gift in your Will, shopping with us at WH Retail and volunteering.
