Advanced Communication Skills Training
Course objective
This course is certified by the Palliative Care Unit at the University of Liverpool and has been designed for healthcare professionals to increase awareness of their own communication skills when having conversations with their patients/relatives. It demonstrates the importance of good communication and explores strategies for improving the healthcare professionals’ communication skills.
Content
Participants will have opportunity to draw upon their communication experiences and explore cases they have encountered when having conversations with patients/relatives and how best to handle them. These experiences will be replayed using experiential methods such as rehearsals with an actor, observations, exercises, demonstration videos and discussions. Time will be given to the creation of a safe environment for participants to gain confidence to compassionately address these types of conversations.
Format
Small group discussions; exercises; demonstration videos; rehearsals of scenarios – role of patient/carer acted by Yew Tree Arts Ltd; observation and feedback.
Who should attend
Healthcare professionals who are required to have conversations with their patients/relatives.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this course, participants will be enabled to:
- Utilise the appropriate communication skills and strategies required to handle difficult situations with empathy and compassion.
- Tailor complex information to meet the needs of patients and carers.
- Reflect upon and critically appraise their own communication skills.
- Show awareness of the evidence base concerning optimal communication skills.
