Growing your group leadership and facilitation skills

Developing leadership within your group - understanding your own skills and leadership styles and supporting members to use their skills

Are you a group leader or organiser?

We talk a lot about sharing the power when we talk about co-production. Group leadership dynamics are about power too - and some training can help you understand when and how you might want or need to exercise that power in a group. We will consider different styles from facilitation to charismatic or participative leadership and what might work best for different groups in different situations.

It can also help group dynamics if you look at power in your group, because someone will take the lead if you don’t (we sometimes see a small group using their power to control a group for their own wishes for example). You want members to act in a helpful way, a way that supports everyone and not a small segment of the group.

This session is an introduction to the ideas around group leadership which are covered in the face-to-face GPM leadership for groups course which we can run for you or your network.

We would encourage anyone who is interested to know more about facilitating groups to attend - some people will decide it’s not for them, some people will recognise it is what they do already. You are also welcome to come with colleagues and have a think about how you share the roles.
